The entire interchange at Highway 101 and Oyster Point was rebuilt
to alleviate traffic congestion and eliminate an at-grade railroad
crossing.
The grade separation project involved:
- Construction of an overcrossing,
- Realignment of the roadway, and
- Modification to the intersection with Gateway Boulevard.
Construction began in May 1993 and was completed in October 1995.
Built in three phases, the project involved the rebuilding of
the freeway interchange to alleviate traffic congestion, as well
as the elimination of an at-grade railroad crossing. As part of
the project, Oyster Point Boulevard had to be realigned and Highway
101 widened.
Project cost was shared by the state, the city of South San Francisco
and the Transportation Authority.
South San Francisco received multiple benefits from the project,
including improved safety at the railroad grade crossing, improved
traffic flow and better access to the business community and industrial
parks east of Highway 101.
