Transportation Authority Announces Call for Shuttle Operations Projects

The San Mateo County Transportation Authority is announcing a Call for Projects for local shuttle operations, beginning March 31, 2010.

Four percent of the revenues from Measure A, a voter-approved half-cent sales tax for transportation, is designated for shuttle operations. Shuttles funded by the TA are among the county’s most successful transit programs, filling a critical gap in the transportation infrastructure by providing quick, convenient service between work sites and Caltrain stations, making that vital link for 1,000 daily riders on 11 shuttle routes.

Shuttles are one solution to what transportation planners call “the last-mile problem.” People may want to take Caltrain to work, but their work site is a mile away from station. And most Caltrain riders don’t live close enough to walk from home to a station.

The Call for Projects is broken down into two categories: one for existing shuttle operations and a competitive category for new or expanded shuttle operations.

The 2004 Measure A Expenditure Plan indicates that priority will be given to shuttles that connect to Caltrain, BART or ferry terminals and to shuttles with contributions from private sources.

Application materials are available on the TA Web site. Applications are due by 4 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2010. Questions can be directed to Stacy Cocke, senior planner at 650-508-6207 or callforprojects@smcta.com.
